The long view

This is a picture from this week 2 years ago:

Notice the wardrobe. Notice the ground.

Here's one from this week last year:

Yes, that was the day that Baby Daisy took it on the chin, oh long-time readers. "Ah, if only Baby Daisy had won a YouTube award yesterday," she thought wistfully. Once again, notice the ground.

Here are a couple of shots from today:

100_3184
That's me standing on a park bench on the trail near our house.

100_3201
And here's the family standing on top of the over 3' fence that lines our property. We were out and about, celebrating the end of the 2008 Easter Nor'Easter.

My tired old point? Snow and lots of it, despite 3 freeze/thaw cycles this winter. Add all the freezing rain we've had recently and you're left with a town covered in a 3' icy armadillo shell.

I know, I know, we're not alone in this!

I know, I know, enough with the winter posts already!!

Point taken. I am, however, only posting these pictures so that I can say this: I live four blocks from a very big river. Twice in the 8 years I've lived here, said river has hit near record levels for flooding. I have never seen a winter like this in all my days in Sleepy Town. It's coming on the end of March and all that snow will have to go somewhere fast (that is, if it ever warms up enough to melt. -16 tonight. Sigh.) There's even more snow up river ... and in the forecast. I honestly fear Sleepy Town may be sunk in about 6 weeks time. I'm starting to wish we lived up hill. I'm actually worried about our beautiful, river-front downtown. Only time will tell but, seriously, I can't figure out how we're going to avoid heavy-duty flooding this year.

On an completely separate matter altogether, putting up that last post damn-near killed me. It wasn't so much posting the pictures that was hard (in fact, that part was easy). What was hard was keeping it wordless. I so wanted to theorize what I was doing and why. I so wanted to reminisce about all the pics. I so wanted to include 10 more photos than I did. I'm self-absorbed that way. But, hey, I managed to silence myself and limit myself to 10 photos.

Now I send out the challenge to all of you. I want to see your wordless photo bio in 10 pictures or fewer. Seriously, I WANT TO SEE YOU: as kids and teens and reckless youths and , uh, whatever. Construct your life as you see fit. Drop me a comment to let me know you've put one up.

Oh, wow. That is some serious snow. I was quite startled to read you were standing on a park bench.

I would love to do a wordless photo bio. Yours was so wonderful.

Maybe-oh-maybe I'll find the time...I should really scan some of my old photos.

Here's hoping that river runs swiftly and keeps your sleepy town safe!

I may have to try your challenge, it will be on my mind this week. It sounds a little fun! I'll let you know if I do.

I love swing shots...and oh that little tummy sticking out. I think we are going to be hearing a lot about high rivers and flooding in the next month or so.

I have been so lagging in the posting department maybe this will be just the thing to get me moving.

I so have snow envy. And baby envy

the snow scares me. the planet is scaring me. we the people scare me.

i miss baby daisy.

kittenpie said...

Oh wow, Mad. I hope you are wrong this time, I'll tell you that. And if I had access to a scanner, I might show you a baby pic or two, for fun, but you know me... Cagey AND not so tech-y. Yoiks.

The snow must go. I am so over it.

I am still trying to get a photo of myself first thing in the morning - haven't managed to do that yet...

painted maypole said...

wow. that is serious snow.

The fact that we're having thunderstorms here in March, that you're being dumped on with snow in March and there were toronados that destroyed much in March, makes me really scared.

I hope you thaw out soon.

Janet said...

Oh the snow! We got more last night. There is even more coming tonight. I'm glad the river is half a kilometer away.

Snow, snow, snow. Maybe I am a bit glad I'm moving to Texas this summer. Just a bit.

I know we are all tired of the stupid weather. I hope the water levels stay normal and nothing happens. Oh boy.

thordora said...

You got nailed. All we got was ice. Lots and lots of ice.

So tired of this weather. Why did I move to this horrid province again? This is insanity...I'm doubting we'll even get to plant anything or use the pool this year...

Christine said...

hmmm. . i might do the picture bio, but we'll see if i have enough old pictures online.

and i'll keep my fingers crossed that sleepy town doesn't get washed away when the thaw comes!

We don't have as much snow as you, but my sister lives in Ottawa and showed us a picture of her husband towering over the railway crossing and stop signs. I really don't think we can stop posting about winter until it goes away already.

Gwen said...

That is a hella lot of snow! Wishing for a giant blow dryer to ease Sleepy Town into spring, should it ever raise its lazy head.

Beck said...

It's -20 here today. And the snow shows no signs of leaving.
Sigh.
I hope that you don't have SERIOUS flooding - I think a bit of flooding is inevitable this year, but I hope it restrains itself nicely.
ah, that photo bio. I went through a prolonge ackward phase and so I probably won't - but MAYBE.

I don't have too many pictures of myself, and i dread the idea of bringing more clutter over here, despite the fact that I would love to do this...

We've got the stomach bug so I don't know if I can even leave the house, let alone stop at my parents' for a photo album.

On Thursday, loud men are installing a sump pump in our basement, so we'll be ready when the CT river valley starts to flood. We're about a mile from the river and the water table is high here already.

Susanne said...

I very much hope that you won't be flooded. Maybe there can be something done, a dam or so.

The photo bio post sounds good. I'll add that to the list of things to blog about...

I'm in on the pictures. Probably Wednesday.

And I just can't fathom that snow. BubTar went swimming this weekend!

NotSoSage said...

Oh, that gorgeous waterfront! I understand your concerns about the flooding...

I'd love to do a wordless photo bio. The only thing is, I don't think I have many shots of me earlier than high school. All the earlier ones still live at my parents' house.

Andrea said...

A wordless photo bio would be lots of fun. I accept your challenge. :)

Look at all that snow! We got twice as much this year as we normally get, and it's nothing like that. Nowhere close. I would be going out of my head.

Julie Pippert said...

How does a system that dumps record snow for you bring record highs for us?

But flooding is a huge continental problem this year...

Babe. I feel for you. Well you know where spring is right now...always welcome.

Lord willin' and the crick don't rise wishes for you.

Now scrolling back to pictorial history.

P.S. Meant to say how cute your cutie is. Seriously, that first shot with the busy bee outfit and the little bit of tummy is too adorable. And I recall all the Baby Daisy stories.

There has been some wacky weather this year for sure. Currently, it is 26 degrees in the South, which is unheard of for this time of year. Normally, we are wearing shorts and flip flops by this time of year, sometimes have been for several weeks.

I can't complain, however, as we were in a terrible drought and every time you all got snow, we got badly needed rain.

I do hope you don't get flooded out though. That would be horrible. Crossing my fingers for your little town!

Christine said...

ok--i have a picture bio up for you.

Will this winter NEVER end? GAH.

Stay safe and dry!

G-d-m snow. Seriously. I've had it. Another 10 cm fell here this afternoon, a slushy white slippery commuting disaster. Again. Grrr.

(Will do photos, tomorrow ...)

Magpie said...

Damn. That IS a lot of snow.

Reluctant Housewife said...

I want to... but, alas, no scanner. I'll try to get my brother to scan them in for me, because... Fun!

And yes, so much snow. And hard snow! Our playground is a sheet of hard white stuff... Like really cold plastic.

I heartily invite you to come visit and enjoy some good southern sunshine. Your snow looks pretty, but oooo, chilly.

Good luck with the melting.
