Welcome to the April Just Posts, another month of great social justice blogging in the parenting blogosphere. The Just Posts are brought to you by myself, Jen of One Plus Two and Su at Creative Mother Thinking.
This past week has been a whirlwind for me with travel, sickness and, as of yesterday, a sudden need to switch Miss M's day care provider. (More on that later but those of you who know of our day care struggles will understand the sleeplessness and tears that have wracked our household in the last 24 hours.) All this is my cheap excuse to beg off my usual researched and reasoned Just Post post.
What I do want to do is give you just a small update about my very first Just Post. Back in January 2007, I sang the praises of micro-credit and decided to loan a small sum of money to two female business women in different African countries (Mozambique and Togo). As of today, one loan has been completely repaid and the other has been repaid at 93% of its original value. I have no doubt that it will be fully repaid shortly. I now have the option of reinvesting my money with other deserving individuals or asking that I be cut a cheque for my original investment. I will do the former.
Micro-credit works. You should try it. I use kiva.org. With it, you can choose the individuals you'd like to help out by reading a profile of their life and an overview of their business plan. It all feels so neighbourly.
And speaking of good neighbours, here are your April Just Posts. Don't forget to stop by Su and Jen's places as well to see what they have on tap this month.

9 hats in the ring:
Kiva is terrific. I've done a few loans but not recently. Thank you for the reminder - I'm heading over there now to revisit this important commitment. Micro-financing is truly a key way to bring sustainability to communities.
Kick Start - have you heard of them? Their version of this (through the use of financing water pumps) is commendable as well.

I think jen thinks Kiva it terrific. ;)
I meant to get a post up today about the Just Posts, but I was out of pocket most of the day due to KayTar's ophtho appointment...so what I'm saying is, it will be a tad late, but it is coming.
I like Kiva too.
Sorry about the daycare turmoil - no fun there.
Such great endeavors! I see some quality people in your list. Good on you for keeping track.
oh! this was the sort of thing I was looking for for mother's day! but i already used heifer international. Maybe father's day....
;)
I heard about Kiva on CBC one day... I've been curious about it ever since. I'll have to go to the website and check it out... I think it's a great program.
Thanks for including me in the Just Posts.
Thanks for all the great reading. Should see me through the crap boxing issuing from the index finger of my beloved and his over-sized plasma screen.
The daycare??!!? I feel for you there.
Go Mad Dad Go. Happy Mother's day to you.
ps.. sure we miss you always. You are like 35% of our comments base. It's like a social justice act in itself.
